2009
As usual I’m indebted to James Oliver for the incredible cello on a number of tracks here. I’m sure I can’t be easy to work with yet he pulled it out of the bag and played exactly what I had in my head.
He always does. That’s why I got on the bus for three and a half hours.
Thanks buddy.
Also a huge thanks to Ross Knowles who played Sitar on the title track here.
We were introduced one morning and two hours later I had the mini disc in my bag.
A truly gifted musician. His collection of instruments will make you cry.
I hope you’re happy with how I arranged it. Thank you.
I’ve spent a hell of a lot more time on this project than anything else I’ve put out there to date. That should be fairly obvious when you stick it in your ears.
The complete lack of any kind of deadline helped.
Everything was a little more meticulous I guess.
I had a whole heap of other songs that were due to go on this LP so picking the unlucky tracks was no easy task.
Although they’ll show up somewhere else soon.
I also finally got an acoustic Guitar a while back and I’ve been slowly creaking and sweating into that each day.
This album is near enough the direction I always wanted to take but until learning a little guitar could not. If that makes sense.
Mostly I don’t consider it a “Hip Hop” album.
In actual fact there’s very little I would put under that heading these days.
Although the original elements are still there, I don’t know really…
File under "me".
I’ve called it “For all It’s Worth” for a number of reasons.
Induction
This sums up where I wanted to take it.
I’m sure there can’t be many DJ tracks like this and if there are I want to hear them.
This was my “I’ve got a guitar, let’s go!” track.
I always wanted to do something along these lines.
It took so long to put together that I want to say bad words….
Fun Facts.
This is the result of dicking with a delay pedal and Rachel saying “Ooo I like that” while cooking up some good food.
I also tried to make it more complicated but she told me not to. She’s wise.
All of the lyrics are true I think.
Paper Solace
This one is true too.
I sometimes wonder what happened to her.
There are some worrying references in there should you wish to dig them out.
I’m not saying.
Audio Sedative.
I wrote this in one hit on a bench by the sea after hearing some news that made me a little insane. I’m glad I did though. It calmed me down instantly.
It’s completely stupid of me to get so worked up.
Sometimes it happens.
Rachel made me re-record the lyrics with more “Passion”. Ha ha…
The Raven
I’m not actually sure where this one came from.
A dream perhaps? Probably.
I honestly don’t know.
Some girl I know hit bottles and metal dishes with sticks on this one.
Interruption
What it is.
For all it’s Worth.
Wrote on the beach.
First verse the sun was shining.
Second verse, months later, just after I’d been out in the snow.
This is my everything is alright today song.
Summer 82
True story.
All of it.
I can swim a little better now.
Book of Excuses.
“I know, I’m really grumpy today.
Let’s write a long list of things that piss me off.
Yeah, that’ll make a nice happy song…”
The Grey Man
More true stories.
Yes it’s about her. Obviously.
These explanations are getting shorter.
Road of Saints
This place exists as well as the characters I mention throughout.
It’s even weirder now the sun’s come back around.
I call it home.
Night Terrors
I don’t have bad dreams anymore but I’ve had some beauties in the past.
Here’s some.
Now stomp your feet!
Glory Bound
It’s a thing.
Circles
I hate these days.
Dear Morbid
I love these days.
Anamorphosis
Good lord that was a good documentary.
Narcolepsy
I’ve always woken up with strange words and phrases in my head that I forget unless I write them down straight away.
I rarely have any idea what it all means or where they come from but sometimes they’ve been incredibly useful to me so I always make sure I have a pen and pad to hand when I go night-nights.
This one I wrote one evening while slipping in and out of consciousness with the pen in my hand and the pad on my chest.
I have no idea what it means but it sounded punchy to me….
Time Check
It's not like it was.
Punch bag
That’s a battle track I think.
I never know what to write about these ones.
It’ll please the hippedy hoppers.
The Cog
One of two songs I wrote a long time ago whilst working at a factory and finding out what I could get away with not doing.
The pretend-you’re-busy walk.
There are far more productive ways to waste your life kids.
Of the Dead
I grew up in an old VHS rental store.
That’s why I still haven’t ever seen Star Wars.
Why would I go for that when there’s all these other garish, titillating, revolting and nutty looking titles on the shelves? Back then it was mental. Shame.
I saw every bad thing there was to see.
So sod your robot crap.
Back to Basics.
Exactly that.
Words, cuts and utter nonsense suckerssss!!!
